What Food Can You Not Eat on Good Friday

Brian Woodcock

Easter is, of course, about much more than just bunnies and eggs. And for those of us who have been celebrating the entire season of Lent, it's especially important to remember Good Friday, when Christians around the world commemorate Jesus's greatest sacrifice. Whether you are celebrating with prayers and fasting, with church services, or simply by abstaining from any meat-based meals (whether that means fish, or going full-on vegetarian), it's appropriate to treat the day with solemnity before moving on to celebrate the resurrection on Easter Sunday.

In that spirit, we're here to help you. You can learn a little bit about the history of Good Friday, and how it's been celebrated through the ages. And if you're unsure of what to make, or what is appropriate to cook, we've got a long list of ideas from our site and from around the web. These are our favorite dishes to make and eat on Good Friday—some involve fish or seafood, which has been a classic choice for Christians on Fridays during Lent for hundreds of years. Others are completely meat-free, which is not only a good sacrifice, but also a healthy choice.

But most importantly, these choices are also relatively simple and easy to make. After all, commemorating Good Friday isn't about celebrating. (We'll do that on Easter, when we're decorating, painting eggs, and hiding baskets for the young ones.) It's about remembering, and being thankful.
